International symposium 27th Animal Science Days

by

On 18 - 20 September 2019, the 27th ASD2019 symposium took place in Prague. The symposium was organized by the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague on the Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources. In connection with the ASD2019, a two-day scientific course focused on Linear models applied in the genetic evaluation was organized. The course was organized two days before the beginning of the symposium on 16-17 September 2019 and focused on the introduction to the theory of linear models as well as the estimation of genomic breeding values. Traditional approaches based on pedigree data as well as methods utilized genotyping information derived from high-density SNP markers were used in the analyses. The course was led by prof. Ing. Bc. Josef Přibyl, DrSc. and doc. Ing. Luboš Vostrý, Ph.D.

Participants from Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Germany, Denmark, Czech Republic as well as Slovakia attended the symposium ASD2019. The Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding Biology was represented by prof. Ing. Anna Trakovická, CSc., Prof. Ing. Radovan Kasarda, PhD., Ing. Nina Moravčíková, PhD., Ing. Kristína Lehocká and Ing. Barbora Olšanská. Within the poster session, the contributions of doc. Ing. Juraj Canrák, PhD., Ing. Eva Strapáková, PhD. and Ing. Jozef Bujko, PhD. were presented. The Department of Animal Husbandry was represented by doc. Ing. Klára Vavrišínová, CSc., doc. Mgr. Peter Juhas, PhD., Ing. Ondřej Bučko, PhD. and Ing. Katarína Hozáková. The Department of Veterinary Sciences was represented by Ing. Ivan Imrich, PhD.

The conference program focused on the breeding area, which covered a wide range of topics from reproduction, genetics to animals’ diseases. The scientific program of the conference was divided into six sections and a poster section. The plenary session consisted of three presentations from the area of genomics (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gábor Mészáros and doc. dr. sc. Maja Ferenčaković) and breeding of livestock (Dr. Visentin Giulio). The contributions included a total of 7 animal species (cattle, pigs, horses, poultry, rabbits, dogs and turtles). Three presentations from KGPB were presented during theatre session:  Runs of homozygosity as footprints of selection in the Norik of Muran horse genome (Ing. Moravčíková), Variation in linkage disequilibrium as a signals of artificial selection in local cattle populations (Ing. Olšanská) and The genetic structure of Slovak Spotted cattle based on genome wide analysis (Ing. Lehocká). As part of the evaluation of the 3 best posters, one of the winner was prof. Kasarda with paper Level of inbreeding in Norik of Muran horse: pedigree vs. genomic data.

Participation in this conference provided us an opportunity to present not only ourselves and our results, but also Slovakia, Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra and Faculty of Agrobiology and Food Resources. According to the responses of the other participants, it was successful.
