Early Career Scholarships to attend International Conference of Quantitative
Genetics 6 are open for applications!

June 14-19 2020
It’s been a rough start to the year in Australia with the terrible bushfires
in our southern states. Fortunately, Brisbane has not been affected, so we
look forward to welcoming you in June. We have delayed the early-bird
registration and poster abstract deadline by a couple of weeks to February 14th.
Quantitative genetics is a field that is central to advances in agriculture,
biology and medicine. At ICQG6, research progress across the breadth of
quantitative genetics applications will be reviewed providing opportunities
to think out-of-the-day-to-day-box, allowing attendees to see how methods
developed in other fields may be relevant to their own work.
 
Focus on Early Career Researchers (ECR):
• Based on feedback from ICQG5, in ICQG6 we have increased the number of
contributed oral talks giving more exposure to ECRs. 
• Poster sessions have been designed as an integral part of the program,
ensuring maximum attendance and interest. 
• Three prizes each for best oral and best poster presentations for ECRs.
• Pre-conference 2.5-day workshops which provide mentorship and training
opportunities for  ECRs
• “Meet the Editor” session for ECRs followed by an ECR reception. 
Pre-conference workshops:
Each workshop will run for 2.5 days (June 10-12) and include lectures and a
practical component. Morning, lunch and afternoon tea included in the cost
($AUD 500/workshop, approx. $US350). Register for one of four workshops using
the conference registration form.
Workshop 1.  Mixed Models:  Professor Bruce Walsh, University of Arizona
Workshop 2.  MCMC for Genetics: Professor Matthew Stephens, University of
Chicago, and Dr Loic Yengo, University of Queensland
Workshop 3. Association and prediction with very large genomic, DNA methylation
and other omic data sets: Professor Jian Yan and Dr Jian Zeng, University of
Queensland
Workshop 4. Bayesian regression using Julia: Professor Dorian Garrick, Massey
University

Scholarships for Early Career Researchers to attend ICQG6.
We have secured funding for 10 scholarships to cover registration for ECRs.
Moreover, we have other funding applications in the pipeline and so hope to
increase the number of awards to cover part or full registration.  If we are
successful, for US-based applicants the scholarship may include a contribution
to travel, but will not cover all costs associated with attending the meeting.
Awards are restricted to those within 10 years of being awarded their PhD (can
be longer with evidence of career disruption).
 
To apply for an ECR ICQG6 attendance award please submit the following documents
to icqg6@uq.edu.au by February 14 2020. 
 
1) A cover letter (no more than 1 page) that states your eligibility (student or
within 10 years of PhD) and a narrative for your motivation to attend ICQG6.
2) A short letter from your supervisor supporting your application.
3) The abstract you have submitted or plan to submit.
 
Awardees will be provided with a cheque in Australian dollars when collecting
their registration pack in Brisbane. Hence, we advise all applicants to register
for the conference by February 14th (Early Bird rate deadline). 
We recognize that for some, attendance at the conference may only be possible
if awarded a scholarship. Hence, awardees who haven’t registered by February 14th
will be sent a link for registration at the Early Bird Rate as well as ability to
upload a poster abstract. Awardees will be selected blind to their registration
status, and based only on their application documents.
Australasian Plant Breeding Conference

The 16th Australasian Plant Breeding Conference (APBC) will be held at QT Hotel,
7 Staghorn Ave, Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia on 21-24 June 2020.
This is the first conference since 2014 and we believe there will be great
benefits by providing this new opportunity for breeders and allied scientists
across all crops (including grains, fodder, fruit and nuts, forestry,
floriculture) to come together.
