The world's largest international congress on livestock and research.
The world's largest international congress on livestock and research.
"Climate change, biodiversity and global sustainability of livestock production"
The annual international congress of the EAAP (European Association of Animal Science; https://meetings.eaap.org) was held in Lyon, France, from 26th August to 1st September 2023. Thanks to the unique combined efforts of INRAE (French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment), the French Association for Animal Production (FAAP), EAAP, the World Association for Animal Production (WAAP), "France Génétique Elevage" (the French organisation for genetic evaluation) and Interbull (the international organisation for genetic evaluation of dairy cattle), this congress has been designated as the largest zootechnical congress in the world. This year, more than 2200 scientists, researchers, representatives of animal breeding companies, and representatives of universities from more than 75 countries attended the event to present their research results in more than 90 sessions over five days on genetics, nutrition, health, welfare, physiology, breeding technologies for cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, insects, fish and poultry, as well as companion animal species, including precision farming.
The Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, through the Faculty of Agrobiology and Food Resources, represents the Slovak Republic in the EAAP. This year at the congress the faculty and Slovakia were represented by prof. Ing. Vladimír Tančin, DrSc., prof. Ing. Radovan Kasarda, PhD., doc. Ing. Nina Moravčíková, PhD., Ing. Kristína Tvarožková, PhD. and Ing. Barbora Gancárová from the Institute of Nutrition and Genomics and the Institute of Animal Breeding.
Each year, the plenary session focuses on significant challenges facing research and advances in zootechnical research. This year, presentations were given on solutions for achieving healthy and sustainable diets or building resilient food systems. The plenary session also included a presentation by prof. Dr. Johann Soelkner (BOKU Vienna), who won this year's EAAP Leroy Award on the topic: EAAP beyond Europe - creating and harnessing the capacity to feed the world.
The congress is always a space for strategic discussions on the current focus of science and research, the creation of consortiums and partnerships, and an opportunity to meet friends, discuss interesting topics and make new friendships. At the same time, it is gratifying to see many young, enthusiastic people at the beginning of their scientific research careers presenting their work and their institutions at the congress.
